Red Merle DogWe are a group of volunteers that help homeless Australian Shepherds. Please feel free to contact any of us (check on Available Dogs pages for contact information) with any Australian Shepherd concerns. We are happy to point you in the right direction!

Prospective Homes

We always try to determine what homes are best-suited for the many different types of rescued Aussies. Therefore, we do an extensive screening of potential adoptive homes to make sure that we place the right dog into the environment that matches its temperament and activity level. A dog whose picture you fall in love with may not be the ideal Aussie to live with you and your furry or non-furry family members. When you contact a rescue representative for your area you will be asked to fill out an application that will help us determine the best match between your family, lifestyle, and previous dog experience with the Aussies we have in our rescue programs.

Do Your Homework

We caution all prospective owners to do their homework, read, research, and think aBlue Merle Dogbout what you want in a dog; check out our Resources page for a good start! If you want to come home to a relaxing evening with your dog, you may not have the right breed. Aussies are smart, active dogs and you need to understand that these dogs can often out think us poor feeble humans; the activity they crave means you have to be active too! We have seen many people who see a well–trained, good looking Aussie and think "that's exactly what I want," but they fail to realize the hours, months, and even years worth of training it takes for the dog to get that way. Many of our rescued Aussies are turned in by their original owners for the very thing that makes them Aussies: they are smart, active dogs!

Dilute DogVolunteerOpportunities

The rescue representatives, temporary caregivers, and other volunteers know about placement procedures and the care of rescued dogs. In addition to reps and temporary caregiver who deal directly with the dogs, there are other volunteers who do things like checking local shelters, Web site maintenance, dog grooming, transport help, and fundraising. If you have a skill or interest you feel could help our rescue efforts feel free to contact one of the rescue groups in your area! We always need more help!
